Difference Between a Conventional and a Maintenance-Free Motorcycle Battery

Most modern motorcycles require a motorcycle battery to power its electrical systems. Currently, there are two main types available in the market: the conventional type and the maintenance-free type. Although they are an often overlooked component, knowing the differences between the two types of batteries can help one better understand their specific maintenance needs and cost.

The conventional type of battery consists of flooded electrolyte and cell accessible construction. Although these are less expensive than maintenance-free batteries, they require more attention. Because of the process of electrolysis and evaporation, water loss is normal and therefore, the periodic addition of distilled water is required. If the battery’s water level falls below the minimum fill line, permanent damage to the battery can occur as the lead plates become exposed to the air. For this reason, it’s important to maintain the water levels above the minimum fill lines.

With a maintenance-free battery, on the other hand, water loss is eliminated since the unit is designed to remain permanently sealed once it is filled with acid. Although slightly more expensive than conventional batteries, it is currently popular among many motorcycle enthusiasts. Because the battery unit is completely sealed, all of the acid is absorbed in the special plates and separators – there is no need to worry about acid leaks, or refilling the battery with distilled water. Even after months of normal use, there would be enough electrolytes to keep the plates covered because of the amount of free-standing electrolytes that are above the plates.

Knowing the difference between the two types of batteries can help a rider make a better decision as to what type of motorcycle battery to use for his bike and maintenance habits. Either way, properly maintaining battery will help ensure its long-term use, and can save money in the long run.

The Best Types of Battery Chargers To Have in Your Garage

Jan 9th, 2012

There are various types of battery chargers available in the market, which you should wisely choose to keep in your garage. It is not necessary that you own all of these different chargers; one is more than sufficient, unless you have a fleet of vehicles, and thus need a few vehicle chargers on hand in your garage.

The most common types of chargers are the trickle type chargers, which have an output ranging from 0.5 to 2 amps of current. These chargers have to be left connected to a domestic mains electricity supply as the battery needs a long time to completely recharge a car battery.

It is also important to note that using these may lead to a build up of internal heat in the battery so obtaining a smart battery charger is a good decision. Then there are fast vehicular chargers that have an output of about 100-200 amps or more. These battery chargers are so fast, they can easily charge a dead battery within an hour. However as these chargers can lead to a build up of heat in the body of the charger, they should be used only by professionals.

Trickle chargers are cheap. Another type of charger you can consider using in your garage is a car to car charger that works just like jump-starting cables. However it takes up less space, and is much easier to use. All you have to do is connect the 12v sockets of the two cars, and the good battery of the two cars charges the flat battery.

Standard trickle chargers are generally cheaper chargers, which will not cause much damage to the car battery. These chargers have transformers that are plugged into the main electricity outlet, and there are a pair of leads connected to the battery. The disadvantage of this charger is that it takes a few days to fully charge a dead battery, and is in no way useful to you if you are in a hurry to start your car. Solar battery chargers are also a form of trickle battery charger. These chargers have a solar panel that produces just sufficient power to charge the car battery through the 12v car sockets.

Portable rechargeable chargers You also have rechargeable car battery chargers which you have to first charge by connecting the charger to the main electricity outlet. Then, the battery itself has to be carried to the car to charge the car battery. This type of car battery charger is best for use in places where there is no power supply. These chargers usually have additional features like charge indicator, air compressor you can use for inflating boats and air mattresses, which prove useful in emergencies.

There are so many brands and types of car battery chargers you can choose from for charging your car battery. Though all of them make high claims, the only way you will be able to know which charger is best for you is by going through customer reviews of different car batteries.
